Postdoctoral Research Associate (two posts), (Full time, fixed term for 18 months)

 

Project title: Hybrid Quantum Information Processing

 

These are EU-funded posts supported through the Framework 7 STREP HIP. This project has the overall goals of new research into hybrid quantum information processing (HIP), leading to new and scalable quantum processing technologies and applications. Hybrid information processing involves the interplay of different physical systems, such as atoms and light, and different forms of information, such as qubits and continuous variables. The Leeds contributions to HIP are to be in two theory areas:

 

1)    Hybrid memories: research topics include interaction between atom ensembles or matter systems and light, hybrid teleportation and processing, integration and scalable device design.

2)    Distributed entanglement: research topics include remote matter interactions via fields, teleportation and state transfer, verification, hybrid quantum repeaters and architectures.

 

You will be expected to produce research relevant to both the specified areas. Currently you will have completed or have nearly completed a theory PhD in quantum information, or a closely related discipline overlapping with the research areas of HIP.

 

These two posts are conditional on EU project HIP funding being transferred to Leeds, with Leeds joining HIP as an appropriately funded partner. The start date will be by arrangement but is expected to be between 1 April and 1 July 2010.

 

University Grade 7 (£29,853 - £35,646 p.a.). It is likely that the appointments will be made at or below £32,620 p.a. since there are funding limitations which dictate the level at which the appointments can start.

Project title: Applications and Distribution of Entanglement

 

This is an EU-funded post supported through the Framework 7 Integrated Project Q-ESSENCE. This project has the overall goals of new research into the applications of and distribution of entangled quantum resources, in pursuit of new and disruptive quantum technologies. The Leeds contributions to Q-ESSENCE are to be in two theory areas:

 

1)    Entanglement-enhanced metrology, or the application of other quantum states to beating the standard quantum limit: research topics include the use of non-linearities, the effects of decoherence and the optimisation of resource use, in processes such as phase estimation.

2)    Entanglement distribution: research topics include quantum repeaters, quantum networking and architectures, optimisation of resource use and entangled resource production, and the efficient verification of entanglement establishment over long distances and between multiple parties.

TQC2010 -- The 5th Conference on Theory of Quantum Computation, Communication and Cryptography

Quantum computation, quantum communication, and quantum cryptography are subfields of quantum information processing, an interdisciplinary field of information science and quantum mechanics. TQC 2010 focuses on theoretical aspects of these subfields. The objective of the conference is to bring together researchers so that they can interact with each other and share problems and recent discoveries. The conference will be held from April 13-15, 2010, at the University of Leeds. It will consist of invited talks, contributed talks, and a poster session.

The scope of the conference includes, but is not limited to:

Special Issue of 'Linear and Multilinear Algebra' on Quantum Information Science

Linear and multilinear techniques are useful in the study of quantum information science. Most researchers of quantum information science have published results and problems in specialized journals of the subject, which may fail to get the attention of researchers on linear and multilinear algebra. In view of this, Linear and Multilinear Algebra would like to publish a special issue on quantum information science so as to provide a platform for mathematicians and physicists to exchange problems, ideas, and results.
Original results, surveys, research problems, etc. are welcome!  In particular, it is desirable to have papers that are accessible to a general mathematical audience. 
Appropriate topics include, but are not limited to: quantum operations, quantum error correction, quantum tomography, quantum state discrimination, entanglement theory, channel capacities, mathematical foundations of quantum information.

Deadlines of the first special issue:

* Submission: August 2010.

* Publishing date: August 2011 (accepted papers will be put on line immediately).

QIP 2010

MeetingsThe 13th Workshop on Quantum Information Processing (QIP 2010) will take place from January 15 to 22 in Zurich, Switzerland. Early registration is possible until November 30.

This year QIP will feature a tutorial programme during three days before the start of the "regular talks". In addition, there will be a rump session with short presentations. Submissions to the rump session are possible until January 19.

QIP 2010 will feature 8 invited talks, 31 contributed talks (selected from more than 160 submissions), as well as a poster session. Invited speakers include

Postdoctoral positions in quantum information

Post DocsThe physics of quantum information group at the department of physics of the Universite de Sherbrooke invites applications for up to three postdoctoral positions. The group is composed of three faculty members, Alexandre Blais, Michel Pioro-Ladrière and David Poulin, whose research interests cover both theoretical and experimental aspects of quantum information science. The successful applicants will be involved in the group’s activities, which includes:

- Experimental realization of spin qubits in various materials (GaAs, SiGe, NV centers,...)
- Theoretical aspects of superconducting qubits, circuit quantum electrodynamics, quantum limited amplifiers,...
- Quantum information theory including quantum error correction, quantum algorithms design, and numerical methods for many-body problems (PEPS, MPS, DMRG). 

but will also be able to pursue their own research agendas. We offer an active and stimulating research environment, enhanced by strong local and international collaborations.

Jobs/PositionsThe Quantum Information Theory Group QUIT in Pavia (www.qubit.it) is searching for highly motivated postdoctoral scientists to join the young and dynamic research team led by Giacomo M. D'Ariano at the "A. Volta" Physics Department of the University of Pavia (www.unipv.it)

Our research concerns theoretical and fundamental aspects of the exciting field of Quantum Information. We consider the mathematical description of general channels, measurements, networks, protocols and algorithms, for the purpose of optimising particular important tasks, and engineer feasible setups approaching the ultimate performances allowed by the laws of quantum mechanics.

We are looking for postdoctoral research scientists with a firm mathematical background, and with a strong motivation to pursue a research career in theoretical quantum physics. Ideal candidates have a proven working knowledge of mathematical and statistical methods for quantum theory, in particular group representation theory, linear algebra, quantum estimation and discrimination theory, information theory and computer science. The candidates must also have the capability of interacting with experimental physicists in order to devise experiments to demonstrate the key theoretical principles.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity of substantially contributing to brand new research projects involving a network of leading groups in the European quantum information community, and aimed to realise working quantum devices representing an important step forward in quantum technology. The QUIT group is the ideal environment for a young theoretical quantum information scientist, providing a unique training in the most efficient theoretical methods and a wide range of international contacts, with frequent visits of both senior and young scientists from all over the world.

Pavia is a nice, medieval town, with an ancient University and many colleges for students, organising seminars, concerts and other cultural activities. It is located near Milan (30 Km), and well connected to the most important touristic sites in the northern/central part of Italy.

PhD Position in Theoretical Quantum Information, Department of

PhD Studentships

This position is currently available, and will be advertised until filled, so the nominal deadline is intended only as a rough guideline.

A PhD position is available for a UK citizen, or an EU citizen that has been living in the UK for longer than 3 years, in our Quantum Information Group at the University of Strathclyde. The funding covers fees and a living grant for 3.5 years.

The topic is in the general area of theoretical Quantum Information, with a little flexibility depending upon the candidate's interests. The supervisor will be Dr. Shashank Virmani - a possible indication of topics can be gained from his publication list on the Los Alamos eprint archive.

Quantum Infomation is a field that attempts to understand the processing of information in systems obeying the laws of quantum physics, and has broad connections to many fields, including computer and information science, mathematics, condensed matter physics, quantum optics, and the foundations of physics.

The group at the University of Strathclyde has four faculty members (Prof Steve Barnett, Dr. John Jeffers, Dr. Daniel Oi, Dr. Shashank Virmani) in Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Theory, as well as an active experimental group in Cold atoms. There are strong links with the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance, including the QUISCO quantum network, and also active links to research groups in Japan and the rest of Europe. The ideal candidate would be self motivated and curious, with an interest in doing theoretical or mathematical work. Ideally they will have a good undergraduate degree in a related discipline - physics, mathematics, or the information sciences - and good analytical and numerical skills.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis as soon as this advert has been placed. The position needs to be allocated to the successful candidate by July 2009, although the candidate may start later.
